DECEMBER 12 from the Edmonton Journal: The board passed a tuition increase of 1.5 per cent and a rent increase of 3.8 per cent. They also hiked parking rates. Four board members voted against the rent increase, including Louis Francescutti, who argued food and shelter are basic necessities and need to be affordable. The number of students using the campus food bank doubled this year, he said. Students’ Union president Kory Mathewson argued the university needs to take a longer-term strategy to building up its maintenance reserve funds.
