Three Words for Twenty-Ten

by Kory M on January 1, 2010

Chris Brogan came up with a great exercise for New Years:  defining the new year by three words rather then by specific resolutions. I love the idea, for two reasons:

  1. There is no way that you can define (or even guess) everything anything that you are going to do in the upcoming year, but if you specify values, then those values can drive and motivate, and help justify your decisions.
  2. It reminds me of something that my family does with time capsules and writing down predictions in four categories: personal, sports, news, and family.

My Three Words for Twenty-Ten are: Live, Love, Laugh.

Live

Do not be afraid to seize opportunities, to excel and be passionate and enthusiastic about new directions, to make decisions and to fail, because that is what life is.

Love

Relationships are key. Develop them as best as I can. Work to transform short term relationships into long term bonds.  Reduce interactions down to what matters, what is important and then build from there, and invest mutually in a new direction that will strengthen the bond.

Laugh

Enjoy yourself. Life is about fun, excitement and laughter. Be funny, and appreciate humor. Make jokes, because sometimes they are the best way to help you through a tough spot. Do not be afraid of humility, and encourage zealousness in actions.

1. Bacon
Bacon represents the meat of the year, the substance. It is a year to accomplish your goals. And remember: there’s no need to trim the fat all the time! Often times the fat is what makes life worth living. So take time to chew the fat, and have a crispy, applewood smoked year.

2. Lettus
Lettus represents new begginings. Leafy green flourishing. Say goodbye to the year old, moist, browning lettus of last year. Forget about it. It’s gone. It’s time for the burgeoning new year to sprout ideas and action. This is your year lettus!

3. Tomato
Your dreams are ripe for the picking. No explanation neccessary.
